Know What To Do

What to do before an emergency is just as important as what you do during an emergency. Prepare yourself and your children by posting emergency telephone numbers for your area on each phone. Make sure your house numbers are clearly visible from the road and that your children know what their address is. At night time, turn on all outside lights to help emergency service crews find your location. When speaking to a dispatcher, remember to remain on the line, speak clearly, and stay calm. Always stay on the line until the dispatcher sys it is okay to hang up.

Kids need to know what to do in an emergency too. Teach your kids when to dial 911... your child could save your life as well as their own.

Drill at Hamlet at Towne Centre
Truck 9 beside the Hamlet at Towne CentreOn Monday evening, March 9, 2009, the Sparta Volunteer Fire Department conducted practice and planning activity at the Hamlet at Towne Centre, 16 Main St. in partnership with the building’s management. The drill simulated a car fire in the back corner of the below-building covered parking structure. Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and quickly deployed an “attack line”- a fire hose and crew to immediately attack and control the fire, while other crews secured a water source by connecting to the on-site fire hydrant and connected back-up lines to feed water through the buildings sprinkler and fire control standpipe system.

Following the drill, fire department personnel toured the interior of the building to become familiar with the layout. Drills and exercises such as this allow the Fire Department members to become familiar with new facilities in the town and to develop procedures to follow in the event of an emergency at the site. These pre-planning activities allow the Fire Department to determine the best access routes to various portions of the building, the best means of evacuating the occupants, and the means by which water can be delivered to potential fires in various locations within the building. They also allow the fire department to become familiar with the floor plan without dealing with the added difficulties of a smoke filled building.

The Hamlet at Towne Centre is the first of its kind in the community. It offers a living complex for persons over 55 years of age. It includes floor plans ranging from one-bedroom 1,120 sq. ft. units through three-bedroom 3,420 sq. ft. units. The facility includes an interior courtyard, multiple elevators, protected parking, and other amenities.
